Extractions

Remove damaged teeth and protect your oral health.

While it’s always our goal to preserve your natural teeth whenever possible, sometimes a tooth becomes too damaged, decayed, or problematic to remain in place. In these cases, a tooth extraction can relieve pain, stop the spread of infection, and pave the way for a healthier mouth.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Extractions are typically recommended when a tooth can no longer be restored through other treatments like fillings, root canals, or crowns. Common reasons include:

  • Severe decay that has destroyed a large portion of the tooth
  • Advanced periodontal (gum) disease that has loosened the tooth
  • Broken or fractured teeth that can’t be repaired
  • Infected teeth that haven’t responded to root canal therapy
  • Impacted teeth, such as wisdom teeth that don’t have room to erupt
  • Overcrowding, in preparation for orthodontic treatment

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction

Tooth extractions are routine dental procedures and can be done comfortably in our office. Here’s a step-by-step of what the process typically looks like:

Numbing the Area
We’ll apply a local anesthetic to make sure you’re fully relaxed and completely comfortable before starting the procedure.

Gentle Removal
Your dentist will carefully loosen and remove the tooth. If needed, a surgical approach may be used for harder-to-reach teeth.

Managing Bleeding & Healing
Gauze will be placed to control bleeding, and you’ll receive clear instructions to support proper healing at home.

Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery from a tooth extraction usually takes just a few days. To speed healing and avoid complications:

  • Bite down gently on gauze to stop bleeding
  • Avoid vigorous rinsing or using straws for 24 hours
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Stick to soft foods and avoid chewing near the extraction site
  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed
  • Keep the area clean with gentle rinses starting the day after

If you experience increasing pain, swelling, or signs of infection, contact us immediately.

Replacing an Extracted Tooth

When a tooth is removed, it’s important to consider how the gap may affect your bite, jawbone, and the alignment of surrounding teeth. We’ll talk to you about your tooth replacement options, which may include:

  • Dental Implants
  • Bridges
  • Partial Dentures

Planning for replacement at the time of extraction helps maintain your oral health and ensures a confident, complete smile.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth are often extracted to prevent crowding, infection, or impaction. If they’re causing pain, growing at an angle, or affecting your bite, we’ll recommend timely removal—often during late teens or early adulthood—to avoid future complications.

Comfortable, Compassionate Care

Whether it’s a routine extraction or something more complex, we focus on making your experience as painless and stress-free as possible. You’ll be cared for with a gentle touch and clear communication every step of the way.
